Normandy

A view of the landing beaches at Arromanches, where an artificial harbor was built. The objects on the beach are the remnants of a floating pier which was transported to Normandy and installed for the D-Day landing. Photo taken in 1994 by Steve & Molly Daniel.

A view of the Normandy coast, looking east from Arromanches. The objects in the water are the remnants of an artificial seawall of concrete barriers, code-named “mulberries,” which were towed across the Channel and sunk into place as part of an artificial harbor which gave Allied ships the opportunity to unload their cargo in relatively calmer waters.
