453rd

Letter from Steve Prosser, son of William H. Prosser

Hi Mr. Lewis,

I had an unexpected day off so I thought I'd scan some of Dad'sstuff for your Web site. I'm not sure about the attachment or engagement dates for the 5th  ESB, but I believe it was put together specifically for the European  invasion. Not sure though! The 5th ESB did land on Omaha. I believe my Dad's Co.  (453rd (Amphibious Truck Company) brought in the 116th Regiment in the third  wave.

Some of the scans I sent should make this more clear. I'm using a Verizon  DSL line. Like you, I got tired of slow connections. BTW, my Dad was Mayor of Altoona, PA from 1964-1972. He died of heart disease on 3/26/73. The reason I mention this is the ironic coincidence that Dad, as part of his job as  Mayor, ran the police department. One of the Detectives was Jack Kuhn--a  certifiable hero of D-Day. Jack was with the 2nd Ranger Battalion and scaled Pointe du hoc. Jack and another fellow were responsible for spiking the German 88s that had a cross fire on the beach. (I include a photo of my Dad and Jack Kuhn).

Anyway, thank you for your service to our country and thanks as well for your great website. I include the following scans:

A WWII Photo of William H. Prosser

1. Photo of 1st ESB Monument

2. Brigade configuration of the 5th ESB

3. An early shot of the 5th ESB monument (possibly June 6th, 1945 when the monument was dedicated)

4. A later shot of the 5th ESB monument with two plaques added

5. Photo of the 6th ESB monument

6. A scan of some of my Dad's artifacts (DUKW driver's license, Welsh  bus ticket, pass to London, and Dad's dog tags)

7. A poem that my Dad wrote about D-Day (published many times in the Altoona, (PA Mirror)

8. Scan of sector landings on Omaha

9. My Dad's operations map of Omaha (after the landing, his unit stayed  on the beach and off-loaded supplies--the map shows ammunition supply, vehicle  transfer points.

10. Scan of Engineer monument locations on Omaha Beach

11. Picture of my Dad and Jack Kuhn (Altoona Police Department)

Please use any or all of these as you see fit.

Best regards,

Steve Prosser
