262 Medical Bn

The Photographs and Text below are furnished by Steve Schaffer, Son of George Schaffer, a WWII Veteran of the 262nd. Bn., 2nd Engineer Special Brigade

These are a few of the officers of Co. B, 262nd Medical Battalion. I can only identify three of them. From L to R they are: Capt. Levitt, Lt. Jules Jaspan, Maj. Tuttle(CO), and an unknown Capt.

This is a drawing that my father, Pfc George Schaffer, did for the magazine, At Ease, circa Sept - Oct 1943.

These are some of the men from Co. B, 262nd Medical Battalion.Back row standing, L to R: Robert "Bob" Labore, Ed "Oldman" Arnhart, Bill Robare, and Arnold Block. Front, George Schaffer.  I believe this picture was taken at Base H Biak when my dad's platoon was attached to the 9th General Hospital

Here's another one with some guys from Co. B, 262nd Med. Batt. at Base H , Biak. Standing, back row L to R: George (thinks that he's MacArthur himself) Schaffer and Arnold Block. Front row, L to R: George "Silent Boy" Kitchen, Charlie Manders, and Ed "Oldman" Arnhart.

Among his other duties, George drove an ambulance and a jeep. This was the second one that he named after his girlfriend Alice, who later (Aug. 4,1945) became his wife.

Unfortunately I don't know exactly where this is, but I think it might be somewhere in the vicinity of Base H, Biak. My father (riding on the side of the truck, at left) was attached to the 9th General Hospital at Biak from Oct 44 until Jan 45. These prisoners might have been Japanese soldiers or Korean laborers  who had been recuperating at the hospital.

This is a picture of George standing by the scenery he painted for the Palm Beach Playhouse at Oro Bay. Now that I think of it, George may have painted the tent sign in the previous picture I sent (the "Monte Carlo tent"). He was something of an amateur artist.

Here's one more variation on the "prisoners" with what appears to be an aircraft in the background.
